The islands were first settled around 3,000 years ago, but Tonga got its nickname of “the Friendly Islands” when British explorer Captain Cook arrived there on his second voyage of the Pacific in 1773. He received an enthusiastic welcome from islanders and found them so accommodating that he returned there in 1774 on his way back from New Zealand.
