Tonga - Tonga is a nation of about 170 islands in the southwestern Pacific lined with unspoiled beaches, coral reefs, and tropical rainforests. The islands were first settled around 3,000 years ago, but Tonga got its nickname of “the Friendly Islands” when British explorer Captain Cook arrived there on his second voyage of the Pacific in 1773. He received an enthusiastic welcome from islanders and found them so accommodating that he returned there in 1774 on his way back from New Zealand. It was then that he gave the archipelago its famous nickname, explaining that “a lasting friendship seems to subsist among the Inhabitants and their Courtesy to Strangers intitles (sic) them to that Name." According to some accounts, though, the island chiefs had plotted to kill Cook upon his arrival but could not agree on a plan. However, Cook was none the wiser to this plan, and the nickname has stuck for more than two centuries.:
