Althea Gibson - Althea Gibson made history as the first Black player to dominate women's tennis in the 1950s. Gibson began playing as a child in the New York Police Athletic League and won her first tournament in 1942. Five years later, she became the American Tennis Association's women's singles champion, and retained the title for 10 years. In 1956, Gibson won the French Open, and one year later, she won the women's singles championships at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. She repeated this success in 1958. Gibson later turned to professional golf, and became the first African American member of the Ladies PGA. :
