Step 1 : Introduction to the question " What animal/creature is the Warner Bros.-Looney Tunes animated character ‘Taz’ meant to represent? "
...
‘Taz’ is meant to represent an Australian Tasmanian Devil. The Devil is a nocturnal, carnivorous marsupial and due to a cancer which affects their facial muscles and tissue, they are now an endangered species. Devils tend to live alone except for females and their young, males in particular are very aggressive to each other. The cancer (devil facial tumour disease aka DFTD) is spread through bites as facial injuries result from this aggression. DTFD has drastically reduced the population since the 1990s.
‘Taz’ was first introduced by Looney Tunes in June 1954 in a cartoon called “Devil May Care” He only appeared in 5 shorts before Warner Bros. Sshut down in 1964. Due to marketing however, the character was revived and he rose to new popularity in the 1990s. Originally created by Robert McKimson, he was voiced by Mel Blanc. He was redesigned by Ted Bonnickson in the 1990s. Taz is a ‘Tazmanian‘ not a Tasmanian Devil, according to his biography and has a significant ‘other’ a Tazmanian She-Devil. He is a hyperactive character who simply loves getting into mischief. He is described as “a strong murderous beast with jaws as powerful as a steel trap.” It is also mentioned that ‘Taz’ eats a large range of animals.
Tasmanian devils are Tasmania’s largest carnivorous marsupial, they have the strongest bite of any predatory land mammal in the world, per unit body mass. They eat small animals and carrion. They climb trees, swim across rivers, have surprising speed and endurance.
