Step 1 : Introduction to the question " How much fuel can a Boeing 747 hold? "
...
The Boeing 747 is a name that was applied to a range of models of a large, long-range wide-body airliner designed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes in the United States between 1968 and 2023. There was considerable diversity across the models which is why the fuel-carrying capacity in the answer is given as a range of numbers. Whichever model one looks at, the 747 "Jumbo" is a really big aircraft: although the initial model, 747-100, had a relatively modest fuel capacity of 147 tonnes, late models like the 747-8i Intercontinental have larger fuel tanks to accommodate longer flights and can carry about 30 per cent more fuel.
A summary of the fuel-carrying capacity of the main models is as follows:
Boeing 747-100: 183,214 litres (147 tonnes or 48,400 US gal)
Boeing 747-200/300: 199,158 litres (159 tonnes 52,410 US gal)
Boeing 747-400: 216,840 litres (173 tonnes or 57,285 US gal)
Boeing 747-8i: 238,610 litres (191 tonnes or 63,034 US gal)
The four engines of the Boeing 747 Jumbo burn approximately 10 to 11 tonnes of fuel an hour when in the cruise. This equates to roughly 1 gallon of fuel per second. Over the course of a 10-hour flight, the 747 would burn 36,000 gallons of fuel. This might sound inefficient but it is in fact more fuel-efficient than many other modes of transport.
