South America and Antarctica - Famed explorer Sir Francis Drake is known for his circumnavigation of the globe, but funnily enough, he was not the first to traverse his namesake passage. Rather, Flemish seaman Willem Schouten first navigated the passage in 1616. Drake discovered the passage when his last remaining ship was blown south of the Strait of Magellan, revealing the open water below South America. The 600-mile-wide stretch of water links South America’s southernmost point in Cape Horn to the Antarctic Peninsula’s South Shetland Islands. The notoriously dangerous passage is where the frigid polar waters of the southern Atlantic meet the cool sub-polar waters of the south Pacific. The passage played a historically significant role in 19th century trade, prior to the Panama Canal opening in 1914.:
