Italy - If you have ophidiophobia (a fear of snakes), it’s probably best to skip this festival in Italy. But for the people of Cocullo, a medieval town in the region of Abruzzo, the Processione dei Serpari held on May 1st each year is a joyful occasion. The festival honors Benedictine abbot San Domenico di Sora, who is said to have removed snakes from farmers' fields in the 11th century. However, it may also draw on older worship of the ancient Roman goddess of snakes, Angitia. Snake catchers and charmers, known as "serpari,” catch harmless snakes, which are passed to locals who then drape them over a statue of San Domenico.
