Baltimore, Maryland - Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston and spent much of his life in Richmond, Virginia, but Poe’s family had deep roots in Baltimore. The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is located in the building where Poe lived from around 1832 to 1835. The house belonged to his aunt and her daughter Virginia Clemm, who Poe married in 1836. He died in Baltimore in 1849, although it’s unclear how he ended up back in the city. Poe had left Richmond to go to Philadelphia, but he was found in Baltimore and died in a hospital days later. His body is buried at the Westminster Hall and Burying Ground in Baltimore, and in 1875, a monument was added to mark his grave.:
