Denmark - Frederiksborg Castle occupies three islets in Castle Lake just north of Copenhagen. The castle was built between 1600 and 1620, although a previous castle had been on the land as early as 1560. After a major fire in 1859, the Danish royal family decided to donate the castle to the state. The founder of the Carlsberg Foundation and Brewery funded reconstruction, and since 1878, the castle has housed Denmark’s Museum of National History. In the 1990s, the garden was recreated to appear as it had been when the original Baroque garden was planted in 1720.:
