The nickname began to take off during William Henry Harrison’s 1840 presidential campaign. Harrison’s political enemies criticized him for saying he was “better suited to sit in a log cabin.” Harrison wore this attack like a badge of honor, becoming the “log cabin candidate” — a log cabin made of buckeye timbers, of course. Harrison won the election, and Ohio gained national recognition as the “Buckeye State.” Along with the tagline, Harrison also incorporated the state’s buckeye timber in its emblem.:
