Bologna - If the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna had been finished as planned, it would’ve been larger than St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. And that might be why it was never finished. Construction began in 1390, but Pope Pius IV blocked the grand construction plans in the 16th century. The dome was abandoned, and the façade was only partially covered with marble. The city maintained the basilica until 1929 when it was passed over to the diocese. The Catholic church finally consecrated the Basilica of San Petronio in 1954, and despite being unfinished, it is still one of the largest churches in the world.:
