This is when the colonial village underwent a series of infamous trials, all involving accusations of witchcraft performed by local women and even some men and children. Believed to have sprung from mass hysteria, the trials kicked off with the first convicted “witch,” Bridget Bishop, who was accused of bewitching five other young women and torturing them in the form of an apparition. Bishop was sentenced to death, and 18 others would follow in the special court convened to hear cases of witchcraft. Upwards of 150 more were tried over the next several months, but by fall, the hysteria had calmed. The trials would go down in history as a cautionary tale of religious extremism and a lack of due process.:
