But in the 1960s, the explorer Helge Ingstad and his wife, archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad, found the remains of a Viking encampment in L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland, dating to around 1000 C.E. The pair found unmistakable evidence of Norse culture, including Icelandic-style structures made from turf, a bronze cloak pin, and iron rivets of the type usually used on boats. More recent archeological research suggests the site may have been occupied between the 10th and 12th centuries, although probably not continuously.
