The years following World War II were a boom for the town of Strong, the manufacturing base of 95% of all wooden toothpicks used in the U.S. The town of just 1,000 people produced more than 75 billion of the tiny devices each year. It's all thanks to an American entrepreneur who realized that white birch was the perfect material for toothpicks, which happens to grow in Maine. By the 1980s, the toothpick market was fading and the final factory in Strong closed in 2003, marking the end of an era. :
