Located in Jaipur, India, the 18th-century palace floats in the middle of an artificial reservoir called Man Sagar Lake. Only one story of the five-story building is visible above water. When a drought prompted locals to build a dam, the palace, which was originally a hunting lodge, was submerged by the lake. The lodge was later enlarged and renovated and became a tourist magnet, with gondolas taking visitors across the lake to explore. Atop the palace, trees and other foliage grow, making the Jal Mahal appear even more like an ethereal mirage in the midst of an oasis.:
