Australia - Fences are either used to keep things in or out, and the nearly 3,500-mile-long “dog fence” of Australia is no exception. Completed in 1885 to prevent wild dingoes from preying on sheep, the six-foot-high chicken wire fence crosses the Australian desert, fencing off the country’s southeastern half. The fence has done more than just keep dingoes out; it's created two very different landscapes, with sand dunes mounting with vegetation on the southern side of the fence, while the dingo side is cast with smaller dunes and much sparser vegetation. The absence of the animal literally alters the shape of the landscape as a larger number of other smaller-sized predatory animals, like cats and foxes, roam free on the dingo-less side of the fence.:
