Romania - As the inspiration for Dracula, Vlad the Impaler wasn’t known for his mercy. The three-time ruler of Wallachia spent much of his time in Poenari Citadel, a fortress overlooking a cliff on the ArgeČ™ River in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. In 1462, the Turks overtook Poenari, and Vlad was forced to flee through a secret passage into the mountains. After attempting to seek aid in Transylvania from the King of Hungary, Vlad was instead imprisoned and held for years, only to be released to fight in the king’s army against the Ottomans, where he perished two years later. As for his beloved fortress, it was occupied for a century more before it was abandoned. In the late 19th century, a mudslide took out part of the castle ruins. What remains of the structure is only accessible after climbing 1,462 stairs!:
