Colorado - In 1881, the first railroad tunnel through the Colorado Continental Divide opened near the tiny mining town of St. Elmo, which quickly grew to 2,000 residents. The Alpine Tunnel was the most expensive and highest altitude rail line ever constructed at the time it was completed. The town grew and shrank with the mining industry. A major fire devastated St. Elmo in 1890, and then after reconstruction, another fire tore through eight years later. In 1910, the tunnel closed, and over time, St. Elmo became a ghost town. Today, a few nearby residents own and manage the preservation of St. Elmo’s remaining buildings using donations from visitors.:
