Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9, 1956) is an American actor and filmmaker. Known for both his comedic and dramatic roles, he is one of the most popular and recognizable film stars worldwide, and is regarded as an American cultural icon. Hanks' films have grossed more than $4.9 billion in North America and more than $9.96 billion worldwide, making him the fourth-highest-grossing actor in North America.
Hanks made his breakthrough with leading roles in a series of comedy films. He would however go on to roles in serious dramas as well as romantic comedies.
He won two consecutive Academy Awards for Best Actor for "Philadelphia" (1993) and "Forrest Gump" (1994).
Hanks has also won seven Primetime Emmy Awards for his work as a producer. He has received more than 7 other various awards and medals for his acting as well as his personal contributions to society, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama, and the French Legion of Honor.
Hanks married American actress Samantha Lewes (1952–2002) in 1978. They had one son, actor Colin (born 1977), and one daughter, Elizabeth (born 1982). They divorced in 1987. Lewes died in 2002 at the age of 49 from bone cancer.
In 1981, Hanks met actress Rita Wilson (born October 26, 1956) on the set of TV comedy "Bosom Buddies" (1980–1982). They were reunited in 1985 on the set of the film "Volunteers". Hanks and Wilson married in 1988 and have two sons. Chester Marlon "Chet" born in 1990 & Truman Theodore, born in 1995.
