For starters, it was operated by hand by a police officer — it took until 1914 for the first electric traffic light to be installed in Cleveland, Ohio. The first traffic light in London was a gas lamp with two red outstretched arms that rose when traffic should stop and fell when traffic was free to flow. Its initial success was short-lived, however. In January 1869, a leaky gas pipe filled the lamp’s tower and caused an explosion which injured the police officer who was operating it. The signal was taken down and wasn’t replaced for decades. London’s traffic problems continued to worsen, and in 1925, police-operated traffic signals returned, followed by the first automated light a year later.:
