Step 1 : Introduction to the question " What is Down syndrome? "
...
Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome (the 21st chromosome ). Chromosomes are small “packages” of genes in the body. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21: a genetic chromosome 21 disorder that causes developmental and intellectual delays.
It is named after John Langdon Down, the British physician who described the syndrome for the first time in 1866.
Down syndrome causes a distinct facial appearance and may be associated with thyroid or heart disease.
It is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21.
Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes within each cell in their body, for a total of 46. A person diagnosed with Down syndrome has an extra copy of chromosome 21, which means their cells contain 47 total chromosomes instead of 46. This changes the way their brain and body develop.
An estimated 6,000 babies are born with the condition in the U.S. every year, which equals about 1 in every 700 babies. There are about 200,000 people in the U.S. diagnosed with Down syndrome.
Most individuals live good lives and the spectrum is wide as to what each person can do. Some are high functioning as where others need much attention in everyday living skills. With adult day programs after the school year ends keeps their mind occupied while learning new skills.
