Its roots trace to 1928, when a student named Frank Gordy founded a fast-food eatery called the Yellow Jacket that served hot dogs and burgers. Locals couldn't get enough of them, and Gordy soon changed the restaurant's name to the Varsity and moved from Midtown to its current location. In 1950, the restaurant expanded to become the world’s largest drive-in and has held that title since. Today, the Varsity can accommodate 600 cars in a multi-level car park in downtown Atlanta, served by carhops in red jackets, whose famous tagline is, “What’ll ya have, what’ll ya have?”:
