San Francisco - The city of San Francisco is home to one of the largest Japanese-American populations in the country. So it only makes sense that a Japanese tribute is nestled in Golden Gate Park. The temple and surrounding gardens were originally installed as a “Japanese Village” exhibit for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition. After the exhibit closed, a Japanese landscape architect named Makoto Hagiwara expanded and maintained the park for most of his life, living on the five-acre property with his family. As the oldest Japanese garden in the U.S. today, the green space is a popular place for tourists who love to take in the arched drum bridge, classical pagodas and lanterns, and peaceful koi ponds and zen garden.:
