Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - In 1967, four lads from Liverpool (better known as The Beatles) released their groundbreaking album “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.” The album was audacious on multiple fronts. The Beatles — having retired permanently from touring — decided to just give up being The Beatles for an entire album. They experimented with new sounds, came up with distinctive costumes, and basically broke all the rules of rock music. The group also pushed their label to make some expensive choices when it came to the album’s release, including a controversial album cover (Gandhi, Hitler, and Jesus were all removed from the original image), a gatefold sleeve with cut-outs and badges inside, and most notably, having the lyrics printed on the back of the sleeve. While today song lyrics can be looked up within seconds, back then music publishers held the rights to sheet music, which people would often buy separately from the album itself to get the lyrics. Giving the lyrics away “for free” just wasn't done — but being the game changers they were, The Beatles convinced their publishers to do it.:
