Germany - The Pilsum Lighthouse is the smallest lighthouse in Germany at just 36 feet tall, and it has been out of service for more than a century. But the short tower has become a beloved local landmark, especially since it appeared in a 1989 film directed by and starring comedian Otto Waalkes. The lighthouse was built in the late 19th century to guide ships on a channel near the North Sea. In 1915, its light was extinguished so that enemy ships would not benefit from it during World War I. It might have reopened after the war, but by then the shipping route had filled with silt and was no longer used. The lighthouse was officially decommissioned in 1919.:
