Germany - The Pilsum Lighthouse is the smallest lighthouse in Germany at just 36 feet tall, and it has been out of service for more than a century. But the short tower has become a beloved local landmark, especially since it appeared in a 1989 film directed by and starring comedian Otto Waalkes. The lighthouse was built in the late 19th century to guide ships on a channel near the North Sea. In 1915, its light was extinguished so that enemy ships would not benefit from it during World War I.
