Although it looks like an ancient Greek amphitheater, Minack's stone stage and seating are a product of the 20th century. The landowner, Rowena Cade, was passionate about the arts. When a local theater group had nowhere to stage their 1932 production of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” Cade offered them her backyard. The production offered no more than a few deck chairs and an improvised flat disk for a stage, but Cade had a vision for a grand outdoor theater that would take the rest of her life to complete. She, her gardener, and a few volunteers carried rock and sand up from the beach below to create concrete balustrades, archways, and an elaborate set. Over the course of her life, the Minack Theatre grew and had dressing rooms and backstage areas added. It still plays host to theater productions today.:
