The breed originated in Lanarkshire, Scotland, near the River Clyde — hence their name. In the early 18th century, other breeds, including Flemish and Shire, were mixed into the breed, resulting in the Clydesdale horse that is known today. The breed first entered America in 1842 but did not become as popular as it was in Great Britain.:
