Sweden - Though believers around the world celebrate the holiday of Easter, it isn’t always with the Easter Bunny and chocolate eggs. Many countries celebrate with unique local customs — take Sweden’s Easter Witches, for instance. The popular tradition stems from an old Swedish tale of witches who would fly off on broomsticks to meet with the Devil on the legendary island of Blåkulla on Maundy Thursday (Skärtorsdagen), returning to Sweden the night before the holiday. The tale spawned a Halloween-like tradition in which Swedish children dress up as witches and go door to door wishing people a happy Easter, in exchange for candy. The holiday is also celebrated in Sweden (and parts of Finland) with bonfires, as legend has it that they were lit to scare the witches off course as they returned.:
