Split, Croatia - Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia, is the most expansive and best-kept ruin featuring Roman palace-like architecture. The emperor at the time, Diocletian, ordered this majestic structure built to become his retirement home. The palace was constructed between 295 and 305 CE. He lived there until his death in 316. The palace was also built to double as a sea fortress across an area of seven acres. After its destruction, the palace ruins were used as building blocks for new homes and buildings.
