Sydney, Australia - Shopping arcades were extremely popular in Europe throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Traditionally, they were a collection of buildings that shared a narrow street. A covering would retroactively be placed between the two sets of buildings for the comfort of shoppers below. As arcades flourished, they became more elaborate. Glass covers were created so people could shop under natural night, ornate archways were designed at both entryways, and streets were replaced with marble or tile. Some even started designing buildings that imitated the style of these modified streets, as is the case for Australia's Strand Arcade. Built in 1891, it houses 80 stores spread out across 3 floors under its beautiful Victorian-style architecture. :
