Originally named Waterloo, the town was renamed Berlin in 1833 in honor of the immigrants’ home country. However, the city came under pressure to change its name after anti-German sentiment boiled over during World War I. After a highly contested (and occasionally violent) referendum in 1916, the name was changed to Kitchener. The choice was made in honor of Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, who drowned on a mission to Russia in 1916 while serving as the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for War.:
