York, England - Known as “the Shambles,” this shopping street in the city of York has been around since the days of William the Conqueror. A series of narrow cobblestone roads wind together to form one of the most well-preserved medieval streets. The buildings that border the street date back to the 14th and 15th centuries, and the roads are so narrow that if you outstretch your arms, you can touch the buildings on both sides simultaneously. The name “shambles” is thought to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “shammel,” which means “shelves” — a regular feature of the storefronts. A number of the houses on the Shambles are fitted with slaughterhouses in the back since the street is home to many butcher shops. In fact, some of the medieval meat-hooks that butchers would hang fresh meat from are still affixed to some of the storefronts.:
