This little bone can be found in the middle ear where it functions as a tuning fork, interpreting sound waves for the brain along with two other bones called the malleus and incus. Together they make up a group called ossicles. The sound first hits the malleus which strikes the incus. The incus then sends vibrations through the stapes, which filter them for the brain. The trio works perfectly in step with one another and the slightest damage or change to any of them can lead to permanent hearing loss or damage. In contrast, the largest bone in the body is the femur, a large bone found in your thigh. The femur is also the strongest bone in the body.:
