Georgia and Maine - The Appalachian Trail runs more than 2,000 miles through 14 different states, but only two states have the honor of being at either end of the longest hiking-only trail in the world. Its southernmost point is in Georgia, while its northernmost point is in Maine. Early maps show possible spurs and extensions that would have terminated in states such as Alabama and New York, but there was never much doubt about the main trail. Regional planner Benton MacKaye first pitched the idea in 1921, and by 1925, he had enough support to organize an Appalachian Trail Conference. A little more than a decade later, in 1937, the trail was completed. Thanks to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and its partners, it is still cared for and preserved today.:
