Step 2 : Answer to the question "In what year did the first hot air balloon take flight?"
1783 - The future of flight was forever changed in 1783 when the first hot air balloon took off in Annonay, France. Invented by brothers Joseph-Michael and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier, the device flowed hot air into a paper or fabric balloon that would then lift off. Their first demonstration in front of an audience on June 4, 1783, was a hit, with the device rising over 5,000 feet into the air and traveling a mile. Afterward, they made some adjustments, outfitting their balloon with an aluminum varnish for fireproofing and tried out taffeta as a constructive material. Their next demonstration with the upgraded balloon was done in front of King Louis XVI and went off without a hitch on September 19 of that year. Upping the ante, they tested the safety of high-altitude flight on living beings by storing a sheep, duck, and rooster in a basket suspended beneath the balloon. All three survived when the balloon landed safely eight minutes later. The first flight with human passengers happened a few months later on November 21.:
