Shoe size - The Brannock device was invented and patented by Charles Brannock in 1926 and has since become the standard method of determining shoe size. Brannock's father was a shoe salesman and young Charles wondered about the best and most accurate way to measure feet. He designed his prototype with an Erector set. The device uses a linear system to measure both length and width of the foot. Each size is separated by a 1/3 inch increment. Widths are separated in increments of 3/16 inch. :
