Italy - Italy is known for its ancient ruins, cathedrals, galleries, and vineyards, but one small village in the region of Puglia in southern Italy is home to whitewashed houses topped with mini-spires that are wholly unique to the area. Called trulli houses, the homes were built to be easily dismantled and constructed using mortar-less drystone walls. This style of construction was caused by a settlement tax in the Kingdom of Naples. The local lord, Count Acquaviva, forced residents into the homes in order to avoid the tax since no mortar was used. Eventually, Acquaviva was overthrown, but this style of building is still used more than two centuries later.:
