Admiral Horatio Nelson - Trafalgar Square may be one of the best-known tourist sites in the city of Westminster, London, but fewer people know the story of the majestic 185-foot-tall column that stands at its center. Nelson's Column was built in 1843 as a tribute to Admiral Horatio Nelson, who famously led the British to victory over Napoleon Bonaparte (and lost his life) in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Designed by architect William Railton, the column features a 17-foot granite statue of Nelson, which was sculpted by E. H. Baily. At the corners of the column’s plinth are four bronze lions that are said to protect the column.:
