Alabama - There are 107 colleges in the United States that are identified by the Department of Education as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Of those 107 schools, 15 are located in Alabama — more than any other state. These institutions are defined by law as “any historically black college established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans.” In Alabama, these schools include Stillman College, Selma University, Alabama State University, and Tuskegee University, whose first president was Booker T.
