Hans Christian Andersen - Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" was first published in 1837 and has become a much-loved fairy tale. The titular Little Mermaid is desperate to become human because she has fallen in love with a handsome prince. She makes a deal with the Sea Witch and, in exchange for her beautiful singing voice, her tail becomes two legs. Anderson's version sees the now-mute mermaid fail to capture the heart of the prince and as a result, she turns into sea foam. The 1989 Disney version of "The Little Mermaid" however has a much more cheery ending, with Ariel becoming a human and marrying her prince.:
