Theodore Roosevelt - In 1901, President William McKinley was visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, when he was shot. The President underwent surgery, and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt rushed to Buffalo and stayed at the home of local attorney Ansley Wilcox. McKinley died eight days after he was shot, and Roosevelt was sworn into office at the Wilcox home on September 14, 1901. Today the building remains one of the oldest homes in Buffalo, and since 1971, it has been preserved as the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.:
