Scarves, gloves, and coats are all part of the standard winter wardrobe, and thanks to young Chester Greenwood, so are earmuffs. As the story goes, 15-year-old Greenwood of Farmington, Maine, was allergic to wool so he needed an alternative to wrapping a wooly scarf around his head. He used wire and beaver fur to create the first set of earmuffs in 1873. A few years later, he patented his creation. By 1936, his factory was producing more than 400,000 sets of earmuffs each year. Since 1977, the city of Farmington has celebrated Chester Greenwood Day on the first Saturday of December, complete with a parade and plenty of earmuffs.:
