Ohio - Ohio is known as the buckeye state because of the large number of buckeye trees that used to cover the state's hills and plains. Buckeyes are so named because they are said to resemble the eye of a buck deer. The link between the state of Ohio and the tree was assured during William Henry Harrison's 1840 presidential campaign. Harrison's opponents said he was "better suited to sit in a log cabin and drink hard cider" and his team decided to use this image to his advantage. Ohio native Harrison was dubbed the "log cabin candidate" and his posters featured a cabin made of buckeye timber, garlanded with strings of buckeyes. The memorable (and successful) campaign forever linked buckeyes with Ohio.:
