The name turned out to be fitting, as Peru was considered to be loyal to the crown and the last country in South America to claim independence. However, the name did not stick — the Lima name we know today comes from the area’s original inhabitants, who called it “Limaq“. Since the Spanish couldn’t pronounce the final “q,” the city became known as Lima.:
