Barrow Island, Australia - In April 1996, an unmanned weather station on Barrow Island, Australia, measured the gusts of Tropical Cyclone Olivia, which reached speeds of 253 mph. Up until then, the strongest observed wind gust was recorded at Mount Washington in New Hampshire in 1934, with speeds of 231 mph. Although surpassed by Barrow Island’s winds, Mount Washington still holds the record of the strongest winds recorded at a manned weather station. While these are both exceedingly strong wind speeds, tornado winds are even stronger. However, they cannot be recorded by an anemometer, which is the official measurement meted out by the World Meteorological Organization.:
