Key West, Florida - In 1982, the U.S. Border Patrol set up a checkpoint along the only exit road out of the Florida Keys, causing a traffic jam that spanned up to 23 miles. This led to a lot of annoyed tourists and threatened to damage the Keys' economy, so to fight back against the perceived government overreach, the mayor of Key West declared the city would secede from the U.S. and become a foreign country. Though it was really just a publicity stunt to raise awareness for the roadblock issue, many Key West citizens got on board, happily declaring themselves citizens of the new "Conch Republic." In the end, the Conch Republic dropped its bid for independence, and the Border Patrol phased out its checkpoint.:
