Egypt - The Rosetta Stone is currently housed in the British Museum in London. But the stone, which is a broken piece of a larger slab, is of ancient Egyptian origin and was originally found near the town of Rosetta about 35 miles northeast of Alexandria, Egypt. Inscribed on the stone is a decree supporting the Egyptian king Ptolemy V (who reigned from 204 to 181 CE) from priests of a temple in Memphis. The official message was copied on large stone slabs called stelae, which were placed in every temple in Egypt. The Rosetta Stone was one of the copies and its discovery led to the understanding of how to read Egyptian hieroglyphs. Why? Because the decree is inscribed three times on the stone: once in hieroglyphs, once in Demotic (the cursive Egyptian script that was used daily as “the language of the people”), and once in ancient Greek.:
