The park includes 35 miles of sandy beaches, and visitors tackle the challenging climb up the sandy dunes. Sleeping Bear Dunes was named for Native American tales of a Mother Bear (the largest dune) lying to rest with her two cubs ( North and South Manitou islands.) The passage between the islands and the mainland is protected as an underwater preserve. Over 50 shipwrecks, dating from the 1860s to the 1960s, lie at the bottom of Lake Michigan.:
