Louisville, Kentucky - A bartender at a Louisville gentlemen’s club, known as the Pendennis Club, is credited with inventing the classic cocktail known as an old fashioned, made with bourbon, angostura bitters, a sugar cube, and a dash of water. The bartender honored bourbon distiller, Colonel James E. Pepper, with the cocktail. Pepper later brought the drink to New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Although this origin story has been called into question by some cocktail critics who trace the drink’s origins back to at least the year prior, that doesn’t dissuade the city of Louisville, which celebrates the drink’s heritage as part of its annual “Old Fashioned Fortnight” during National Bourbon Day in June. Today, the old fashioned remains the official cocktail of Louisville, Kentucky.:
