Alabama - The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black military fighter and bomber pilots to serve in the United States Armed Forces. Before 1940, the U.S. military had barred Black people from flying planes, but after lobbying from civil rights organizations and the press, the first squadron of Black pilots was formed in Tuskegee, Alabama. Between 1941 and 1946, more than 1,000 Black pilots trained at Moton Field, in addition to navigators, bombardiers, instructors, aircraft, and engine mechanics. The Tuskegee Airmen flew more than 1,500 missions in World War II and encouraged the eventual integration of the armed forces. The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site preserves Moton Field and its Hangar One, including one of the red-striped planes flown by the Tuskegee Airmen.:
