When the bridge was erected in 1886, it connected downtown Porto with a district of notable port houses. The double-decker bridge features a metro line and sidewalk on the top level, while the lower level carries cars and pedestrians. Architects will also notice that the lattice ironwork of this bridge resembles the Eiffel Tower; this is because one of Gustave Eiffel's most dedicated students, Théophile Seyrig, designed it. He also designed the Puente María Pía, another bridge less than a mile downstream.
